Chronic low back pain (LBP) is currently the second leading cause of disability in the United States, affecting approximately 10 percent of the population. Chronic low back pain is linked to increased medical costs ($100-200 billion per year in the United States), reduced productivity, and reports of a reduced quality of life. This condition is expected to become more common in the future as the population ages.
Currently, there are several methods available to treat chronic low back pain, including medications, physical therapy, injections, and interventional procedures, among others. These treatments can be effective, but sometimes carry the risk of side effects and complications.
Peripheral Nerve Stimulation (PNS) May Offer Alternative Chronic Back Pain Treatment Option
An alternative to the treatment options listed above is peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS). PNS works by delivering small amounts of electricity to the nerves in the low back, activating muscles near the spine. The SPRINT® PNS System has been studied extensively for low back pain, shoulder pain, post-amputation pain, and post-operative pain. The SPRINT PNS System is cleared by the FDA for up to 60 days of use for the treatment of chronic pain. A study published in 2019 showed that SPRINT PNS can significantly reduce low back pain by an average of 63 percent through at least one year following treatment.
On-Going Study Shows SPRINT PNS System May Offer Relief from Chronic Back Pain
More recently, an on-going study is using the SPRINT PNS System to treat individuals with chronic low back pain.
The purposes of this study are to compare the effectiveness of the SPRINT PNS System to other standard of care treatments for low back pain and determine if the SPRINT PNS System can reduce low back pain, improve function, and reduce the need for pain medications. The study is supported by the US Department of Defense and currently open to enrolling qualified participants.
Participate in the Chronic Back Pain Research Study
This research study is currently enrolling patients with chronic low back pain.
- Patients will either receive the SPRINT PNS System or alternative standard of care low back pain treatments
- Participants who do not initially receive the SPRINT PNS System at the beginning of the study will have an opportunity to receive it later in the study

I am seriously considering Sprint PNS system for my acute lower back pain for the last 10 years. Can anybody please let me know their experience of using the Sprint system. Getting pain relief just for one year does not solve the problem. I am seeking longer lasting relief. Thank you
